This website is used primarily for teaching the course UMSI 106, Programs, Information, and People, at the University of Michigan School of Information.

Visitors who are not registered for the class can still check out the textbook and do everything but save your work and track your progress, without logging in.

Why Log in Via Canvas?

You have to login to be able to save your work and come back to it later, or submit assignments for grades.

Also, to get "class preparation" points for reading the textbook and doing exercises before class sessions, you have to be logged in.

So...Login by going to the Canvas site for the course. Click on Assignments > Textbook Login. Then click "Load Textbook Login in a new window".

Your Privacy

This book is free and open source. As part of our educational mission we do collect usage data to help us better understand how you learn and how you use our books. In exchange, we may use this data to make decisions about revisions to the content, and we may use this data to publish academic papers. We would never publish anything that revealed your identity. We may share this data with fellow educational researchers, but rest assured that all personally identifying information will be anonymized before we do.
